You can't fit more into your life (3 tips to declutter and regain control)
Nov 10, 202010 pounds of crap won’t fit in a 5 pound bag.
Now, look, I grew up on a farm so I have extensive experience in waste management. If handled correctly, not only do you avoid problems with the animals, but “waste” can be re-purposed to be quite valuable.
But I can promise you something..
If you try to force too much crap into a limited space, or choose to neglect dealing with it, you’re going to make a mess of things. Fast.
Do you ever feel this way in your life? Like you're trying to force too much stuff in?
Maybe you have too many priorities. Your schedule might be overwhelming. Maybe your house is a mess. The problems just seem to outnumber the solutions...
Well, don't worry. If you are feeling this way, I’m going to share 3 tips to declutter and regain control of your life.
If you find yourself in that spot, where you're just trying to set too many goals, smash more things into your life, and things are overflowing and making a mess; it's going to cascade downhill.
It's going to interfere with other parts of your life. You're going to create chaos, or even worse, you'll become discouraged and stop reaching for the life you want.
Have you been there?
Unfortunately, a lot of folks tend to believe that this is normal. Maybe you’ll even begin to accept that this is just the way that life has to be...
Maybe you’re thinking, “I just need to work harder.” or “Something will eventually let up, and then I won’t feel so overwhelmed.”
I know you may have the best of intentions, and you have grit, and you want to just keep pushing forward. But this is not how we solve the problem.
Remember the crap and the bag? Instead, we need to DETOX.
The fact is: You can't fit more into your life. Here are 3 tips to declutter and regain control;
Maybe it's your actual physical space and environment that needs decluttering or detox. Perhaps it's your mindset that needs it, or your relationships, or even your roles that others impose on you. Let's get to it:
-
Decide what is most important to you.
If you’re anything like my wife Stacey, you love watching those home makeover and closet cleanout shows. They may not be my favorite thing in the world, but they have some really valuable lessons (not that I watch them with her or anything;).
The first thing they ask you to do is to choose what's most important to you.
What can you simply not live without?
Seems simple, but how often do we actually take the effort to do this step? If we neglect to do it, those decisions will unfortunately end up getting made for us.
We wouldn't want someone else tearing through all of our stuff and throwing out things that THEY feel is unimportant. We want to be the ones in charge of that situation, and CHOOSE what we’re committed to keeping in our lives.
-
Create space
You need to actually remove the stuff that doesn't mean a lot to you, or create room for change to take place. As painful as it may be, it’s necessary.
That means chuck it, sell it, or give it to someone else.
Remember, our lives only have a fixed amount of space, energy, time, and resources. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, that means all of it is being taken up.
How can you possibly have room for ADDITIONAL experiences when you're already overflowing?
When you feel like something is about to give, you’re usually right. So you better be the one to decide what goes, or it will be decided for you. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t like the sound of that.
Choose to reduce overwhelm and bring joy into your life.
-
Take bold action
So we've removed the things we don't need, and we’ve held tight to what we want.
It's time to fill the space you’ve made with something good. Ever hear the phrase “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”?
When you create a void, the power of attraction will fill that empty space quickly, and without fail. So once again, you had better be the one taking bold action and deciding what you want your life to be made of.
Are you staying motivated by filling your mind with positive affirmations and thoughts?
Are you creating quality output in your work?
Are you connecting deeper with people who lift you up?
Are you bringing joy into your life?
If you’re not, you can rest assured that all the work you did to create space for growth in your life will just be filled up instantly, and overflowing with more crap.
I hope these tips help you to declutter and regain control in your life.
