3 Sure Fire ways to Stay Motivated When You Feel like you Want to Quit

stay motivated win at life Oct 13, 2020

Stop buying the quick fix…

You know, the microwave mindset. The “push the button” and “I want it now” attitude. The “I want it 10 seconds ago, and it better be the best thing I ever got” mentality.

We all too often fall into that trap of the $19.95 lie, the overnight business in a box, and the magic diet pill.

We've heard it all before, and we need to stop buying into it.

Don’t worry if you're feeling this way, or if you’ve fallen victim to that quick fix mindset before. Today I am going to teach you how to hustle for what you want and stay motivated when you feel like you want to quit.

We all know what happens if we do fall for that “magic short cut” over and over again; it leads to unrealistic expectations, disappointment, and failure.

I have worked with thousands of clients through the years in our fitness business, and I have seen this too often…

I begin working with a client and they are beginning to see some slow and steady success. But then, out of nowhere, they get distracted by the magic and fast results that their neighbor or sister-in-law is doing.

They decide that hard work and slow progress is too difficult and they go for that quick fix.

I have also had many clients who have come to me after falling for a quick fix in the past, and they have developed a warped idea of how success happens.  They expect results without a great deal of effort or endurance.  They believe things will magically happen without strenuous physical or mental exertion.

/>On the contrary, when a client approaches their goals with the appropriate, long term mindset, they stay motivated, and find what we call sustainable success.

It is difficult to see so many people approach what they want most in life with this quick fix mindset.  We often see failure and deviation, due to the distraction of the next fad or gimmick.

Luckily, I recognized this pattern in clients very early in my coaching career, and now I always set their expectations for their journey on day #1.

 I tell every single client;

“This is going to be really hard. It's going to take a long time. And, it's a little different for everybody, so it's going to take some finagling along the way. BUT….  When you approach a goal this way, stay motivated, and set your mind for slow, steady progress, you will find sustainable success and win at life”.

I know what you're thinking…

 “This time it'll be different.”

“This will be the time that I get to get what I want really fast, without having to put in the hard work”.

Please, don't fall for it! (again).

At Living a Champion Life, we teach people how to “Hustle”, stay motivated,  let go of that quick fix mindset, and ultimately; win at life.

Here are 3 sure fire ways to stay motivated when you feel like you want to quit;

1.) Show up to do the work.

Make sure that you're at the right place, at the right time, with the right mindset and tools to complete the task.  Be emotionally invested and prepared to do the job at hand.

There was actually one time when I was scheduled for a surgery and the surgeon forgot his tools…

This is a true story. This happened to me…

There I was, hooked up to IVs, and laying in the hospital bed, and the nurse came into the hospital room to tell me, “Sorry, we can't do your surgery today because the surgeon forgot his tools.”

“WTF”?

Now I'm pretty sure that surgeon had to go get a new job that day, because he didn't show up, prepared and ready to complete the work.

Now... that's an extreme case, but a perfect example of how important it is to be present, prepared, and mentally invested, when you show up to do your job.

2.) Embrace the montage.

Now think about the 1980’s montage in a movie…

You know, it's usually got that awesome guitar riff, and the hero goes through this transformational journey. It doesn't just happen overnight. It starts with failures, trials, tribulations, and difficult challenges over time. (Did I mention the awesome 80’s song?)

Anyway...they take that journey and compress this growth of the Champion into a 3 minute song.

They take a large amount of time and condense it down into 3 minutes.  They do this because it would be a really boring movie if they showed each and every day…

The days the hero didn’t want to get up and train.

The times they almost quit.

 The not so awesome workouts.

They cover it up with a super awesome and motivating song, because otherwise, no one would watch the movie.

The truth is, we need to embrace the journey.

We need to understand that in “real life”, transformations take a very long time and requires a lot of hard work, on a very long journey outside of our comfort zone.

If you don't embrace the work, time, and effort that is going to be needed to complete your journey, then you're going to get discouraged really easily and never win at life.

It reminds me of a not so funny story…

I was working with a client when I was new in the fitness industry.  I completed the initial orientation with her, got her set up with a great fitness prescription, and she was ready to roll. In parting for the day I was like, “Oh, now  now I'm going to go get my workout in”.

She looked at me with disgust… and I was confused.

She then asked me; “Why do you need to  work out?”

I answered “Well I want to remain fit, and fitness takes maintenance”.

She got so angry at me and asked, “So this is something I have to keep doing?”

This woman actually thought that I had scammed her.   She actually believed that people could arrive at “level fit” and get to stay there forever.  She was appalled that living healthy and fit requires a challenging journey and continued maintenance.

Don’t make this same mistake.

I want you to understand from this moment forward, that any transformation requires time, effort, and consistency.

I encourage you to create or choose from any playlist that brings joy to your life and helps you to stay motivated  (okay, non-80’s music is allowed, whatever pumps you up).

Now, imagine yourself going through the journey as it is unfolding.  Imagine the opening sequence, the middle of the quest, and the heroic finish.  Listen to this song as often as you need to stay motivated when you feel like you want to quit.

3.) Take time to Restore.

Give yourself time to recover and rejuvenate along the path of your journey. Make sure that your body has time to heal.  Allow time for mental breaks and time for your mind to restore itself.

If you don’t restore along the way,  you could  crash and burn.

I have witnessed so many clients who have great intentions, but do not allow themselves proper rest days.  That’s when injuries arrive.  They begin to get stressed and anxious.  And sometimes they quit.

I know I've felt it myself because I tend to really get after the goals I want.

I’ll be working so hard that I forget to take days off.

Everytime I have made this mistake I literally crash and burn physically and mentally, because I didn't give myself the rest and recovery that I needed.

Avoid making the same mistakes I have.  Schedule rest days and regain control of your mission.

This doesn’t mean you have to sit on the couch all day.  It means you give yourself a day off from the normal physical and mental exhaustion of your journey.

Go for a walk.  Catch up with a friend.  Plan a date night with your love.

Take a day to restore your batteries so that you can continue on your journey with energy, focus, and motivation.

Ok….now you know how to properly “Hustle” towards your goals.  It is all about showing up, embracing that montage, and giving yourself time to restore.  Let’s get after it!
