The Power of Confidence and Authenticity
Aug 13, 2024Reflecting on my childhood, I realize not everyone had a karaoke machine permanently fired up in their living room….
For me, it was more than just an occasional party night—it was a constant. In our home, music was not mere background noise; it was an integral part of who we were.
When I first introduced Jesse to my family, I knew it was a significant moment.
Would he think we were weirdos when we walked into our living room to find my Dad singing Elvis’s “A Little Less Conversation” with the family clapping and dancing along? (On a Tuesday afternoon).
Or would he embrace our musical enthusiasm and jump right in?
It was literally make or break for our relationship. I hadn’t warned him about it; it was a kind of test to see if he was the one for me.
Obviously, Jesse jumped right in.
He gave out a “Woot,” started to groove, and asked to sing the very next song. In that moment, as I watched him embrace our tradition with such enthusiasm, I knew he was “The One.” That shared moment of musical connection was a pivotal point in our journey together.
-TOTAL UNRELATED SIDE NOTE: Later that afternoon, we performed our first duet together: “Leather and Lace” by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. To this day, those lyrics resonate with that moment in our lives:

It felt as though the song was describing the moment in real time, while predicting the future we would build together.-
Not long after, with the support of my parents, Jesse and I started “Surf & Turf Entertainment,” a DJ and karaoke service. This was our first business together.
We do not DJ anymore, other than in our own living room, our own parties, and the occasional friends & family event. But, back in the early 2000’s, we paid our way through college with this business.
We MC’d weddings, entertained bar rooms, and encouraged countless people to take the stage and sing their hearts out.
Here's something I discovered about people then, but am only putting into words now:
Confidence doesn’t come easily to everyone.
Some might feel like they need a bit of liquid courage to sing and dance in front of others. However even through the many times where I have completely removed alcohol from my life (I haven’t had a sip of alcohol in almost a year), and still, singing and dancing remain second nature to me.
Being in the spotlight doesn’t faze me because I was raised to embrace what I love and find confidence in my authentic self.
What happens when people have the courage to take the stage, release their inhibitions, and be 100% authentic is
pure magic
.

The truth is; People love authenticity.
And this is why I have witnessed crowds reward even the worst singers with standing ovations.
Confidence is more attractive than talent.
But talent with confidence is pure gold!!!
The real breakthroughs in life often come from overcoming our own inner barriers.
It’s often the self-imposed limitations that prevent us from fully expressing ourselves and reaching our true potential.
Whether it’s the nerves before a big presentation or the fear of judgment when you decide to leave a career after 20 years to explore a new adventure, these feelings can be intimidating and scary.
Truth be told, they can make most people quit and return to their comfort zone.
But trust me, after coaching people for over 25 years, I’ve learned that facing and conquering these inhibitions is crucial for living authentically and achieving true success.
I’m not sharing this story to brag. Like I said, I know I’m not a great singer or dancer. What I do have is the courage to stand, speak, sing, and dance in the arena.
I was blessed to be raised by parents who made self-assurance in the spotlight feel normal. And so, I am dedicated to spending my life helping others realize they can too.
Normalize being outside of your comfort zone, inhibition walls down, and your authentic self turned up.
In this video, Jesse is spontaneously entertaining this restaurant in Temecula, CA.
He is being his authentic self with people we had only met that weekend.
He was in the Arena.
Zero Inhibitions.
Authenticity was turned all the way up.
(The prefect example of one of the things I love most about him).
You have the power and confidence within you to achieve whatever you desire.
You don’t have to sing karaoke, or dance on a stage, or entertain a restaurant full of strangers.
You get to choose what you do in your arena.
This is your story.
Do not let inhibitions limit your potential or keep you from being the hero of your own life.
The journey to embracing your true self and overcoming your inhibitions starts with believing in that inner strength.
So, step up.
Embrace your unique voice and let your true self shine. This is your journey, your chance to live fully and authentically. The freedom to be your true self is the ultimate success.
